view across the Apuan Alps from Laia del CrocePicture

Hello.

My name's David Hunter. This website describes a few of my walks around southern Europe.

I hope to add a few more before too long.

I live in Edinburgh with my family: Clare, Fiona and Callum. I like to go on short hikes, preferably somewhere warm, maybe a couple of times a year. My ‘likes’ include maps, peace and quiet, wildlife, historic sites, comfy hotels and decent food.  I am not keen on fancy equipment, or being uncomfortable (eg camping, bothies!), or getting lost. Sometimes though, these can be difficult to avoid (especially the last one...)

The website describes a few very modest walks I’ve done in the past couple of years, to southern Andalucia, the Garfagnana area of Italy, Gran Canaria, Languedoc in southwest France and around Córdoba in Spain. My ideal is to walk on my own from A to B; linear walks where you feel that you have really covered some distance. My ideal would be to walk out of one airport and to another, without ever catching a bus, train or taxi. Not quite managed that yet.

I tend to pre-book accommodation before I go; I know that this is a bit boring and limits your options once you arrive, but I no longer can contemplate the prospect of arriving at a remote village at dusk with no where to stay. (I did hitch most of the way across the USA when I was 21, sleeping wherever I lay my bag, but that was a long time ago!) Also, most of these walks have been out of season so there’s a greater chance that hotels might be shut. I might be braver and take a more unplanned trip soon. I like to travel light - if you're only away for a week, you don't need too many clothing changes, do you?

I'm not a great photographer, but there are a few pictures taken with my mobile: sorry for the wobbly ones!
